The EU has a seat on the EBRD’s board and the position has been vacant since March when the previous director, Vassili Lelakis, left to join the Commission’s Athens-based taskforce on the Greek economy. Verwey took up the role on 22 April. The Commission plans to recruit a permanent replacement before the summer.
Verwey, who is responsible for co-ordination with the EBRD and other international lending institutions, joined the Commission in September 2011 from the Dutch finance ministry. He was one of the architects of the European Financial Stability Facility, the temporary eurozone rescue fund established at the start of the Greek crisis.
