Hearing Set For Teen Accused Of Highlands Ranch School Shooting

LITTLETON, CO — A September hearing has been set for one of two teens accused of murder in the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting. Devon Erickson, 18, is accused of opening fire at the school May 7. Maya McKinney, 16, who goes by Alec, has also been charged with murder.

Erickson faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, burglary, possession of a handgun, theft, reckless endangerment and violent crime causing death.

Kendrick Ray Castillo, 18, had only three days of school left before graduation when he was killed in the shooting. Castillo participated in the Highlands Ranch robotics team and planned to become an engineer. He faced down one of the armed teens to save his classmates, and will be remembered as a hero.

Eight other students were also shot and injured. They have since been released from the hospital.

Erickson’s attorneys will have to go over thousands of pages of evidence before his September hearing.

An affidavit with details about the case and the evidence has remained sealed from the public. Details about how the teens got a hold of the guns and their motives have not been released.
