Last weekend in Long Beach, CA the “American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes became a two-time current world champion, capturing the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Championship from Juice Robinson at NJPW Fighting Spirit Unleashed.
New Japan has since released the complete post-match interview with Cody and his wife Brandi, just moments after his grueling bout. Earlier in the week we reported on his scathing promo calling out current and former NXT Superstars who refer to themselves as “Dusty’s kids”.
Below are transcripts from the post-match media gathering, which you can watch in full in the video above. A note to fellow editors: feel free to use our transcriptions with a shout-out to ProWrestling.com and a link this article.
WHAT DOES THIS TITLE WIN MEAN FOR THE NWA?
“It means they have a second title. It means Billy is sitting at home right now, or he’s on stage somewhere literally rubbing his hands together, because he picked a wrestling project that worked. He didn’t strap himself to a ship that’s already sinking, he strapped himself to Cody Rhodes. So this belongs to Ten Pounds of Gold as well.”
CODY ON HIS UPCOMING REMATCH WITH NICK ALDIS:
“Wrestling has highs and lows. I’m on a high – I’ve been on plenty of lows. Nick Aldis is way better than the internet and the locker room gave him credit for being. He is outstanding. He is responsible for [the NWA Worlds Heavyweight title]sitting here, actually. But Nick Aldis does not benefit from a two out of three falls match. That match goes the distance, and all puffed up like Clubber Lang at 238 pounds – I have more soul than anybody in the industry. I can go longer.”
“It’s a big front. Him and Jeff Jarrett are essentially putting on their version of ALL IN. That’s sweet. Jeff wants his revenge over the GFW disaster, which is partially my fault. I just mailed him the belt back. Guess what Jeff – show up, sit in the front row and I’ll beat your boy 1-2-3. End of story.”
WHO IS NEXT?
“My home promotion is still Ring of Honor. I know the big [rumor]is January 1st we’re going to show up in WWE. Pretty possible, but my home promotion is still Ring of Honor. And the ROH World Champion Jay Lethal – if you can recall my very first match was Jay Lethal at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Just beat the hell out of him. The whole franchise act? Cross Rhodes 1-2-3.”
CODY ON SPECULATION THAT BULLET CLUB MAY SIGN WITH WWE:
“It’s kind of a tricky subject. I had a great time in WWE. There’s highs and lows, but I cut my teeth there. I met my wife there. Everyone has different opinions – and remember there’s five of us, really. We’re a core unit that’s planning on sticking together. Hopefully we can really do that. I’ve had a great time with these guys, and I’d like Being the Elite to continue. I sure as hell would like to bring you guys something – kind of like an ALL IN sequel.”

“In 2019 there’s more wrestlers with no fear than ever before. I don’t fear anything. I don’t fear Vince McMahon, Triple H. I don’t fear Hunter from ROH. I don’t fear Gedo from NJPW. I go out there and play my music, and you pay for it, and I do my best damn job I can possibly do. The guys I link up with are the exact same way, and I think that’s good for wrestling.”
